Nicholas Ayling
In the name of God Amen the 27th of November AD 1639.
I Nicholas Ayling of Stedham in the County of Sussex Yeoman being sick of body but of good and perfect memory thanks be to Almighty God therefore do make and ordain this my last will and
testament in manner and form following
That is to say First I give and bequeath my sole to Almighty God my maker and redeemer and my body to be buried in Christian burial.
I give to the Cathedrall Church of Chichester Four Pence.
I give to the Parish Church of Woolbeding Three Shillings Four Pence.
I give to the Parish Church of Stedham Three Shillings Four Pence.
I give to the poor of the said Parish Twenty Shillings.
I give to the poor of the Parish of Woolbeding Twenty Shillings.
I give and bequeath to Nicholas my son Forty Shillings of lawful English money to be paid within one year after my decease.
I give and bequeath to Nicholas ["Nicholas" is crossed out in the original document] Thomas, William and Katherine the children of said son Nicholas Forty Shillings a piece of lawful money
of England to be paid to my said son Nicholas for the use of the said children within one year after my decease And my said son Nicholas to pay the said several sums of Forty Shillings with
such use and interest as he shall make thereof to every of his said sons as they shall accomplish their several ages of Twenty years and also to pay the said sums of Forty Shillings to his
said daughters as they shall accomplish their several ages of Sixteen years and if it shall happen any of the said children to depart this natural life before they shall accomplish their
several ages as afore said then his her or their portion or portions so departed to remain to the residue of the said children which shall be then living equally to be divided.
I give and bequeath to Thomas, Nicholas and John the sons of my son Thomas Forty Shillings a piece of lawful English money to be paid to my said son Thomas for the use of his said children
within one year after my decease and my said son Thomas to pay the said several sums of Forty Shillings with such use and interest as he shall make thereof to every of his said sons as they
shall accomplish their several ages of Twenty years and if it shall happen any of his said sons to depart this natural life before they shall accomplish their several ages aforesaid then his
or their portion so departed to remain to the other of them which shall be then living equally to be divided.
I give and bequeath to Edmond, Richard and Nicholas Yalden the sons of my daughter Alice Yalden and to Margaret, Annis, Elizabeth, Mabel and A?e [ink splodge] the daughters of my said daughter
the sum of Ten pounds a piece of [smudge] money of England to be paid to Edmond Yalden my son in law within one year after my decease and the said Edmond to pay the said several sums of Forty
Shillings to every of his said sons with such use and interest as he shall make thereof when they shall accomplish their several ages of Twenty years and also to pay the said several sums of
Forty Shillings to his said daughters with such use and interest as he shall make thereof as they shall accomplish their several ages of Sixteen years.
I give and bequeath to Mary Stent ? ? of the daughter of my said daughter Alice Yalden the sum of Six Shillings of good and lawful money of England
[the previous sentence starting "I give and bequeath" and ending "money of England" is crossed out in the original document] and if it shall happen any of the said children to depart this
natural life before they shall accomplish their several ages aforesaid then his her or their portion or portions so departed to remain to the residue of the said children as shall be then
living equally to be divided.
I give and bequeath to William and Annis the son and daughter of my son William Forty Shillings a piece of lawful English money to be paid to my said son William within one year after my
decease And my said son William to pay the same with such use and interest as he shall make thereof to his said son when he shall accomplish the age of Twenty years and to his said daughter
when she shall accomplish the age of Sixteen years And if it shall happen any of the said children to depart this natural life before they shall accomplish the several ages as aforesaid
then his or her portion so departed to remain to the other who shall be then living.
I give and bequeath to John, Elizabeth and Mary the daughters ["daughters" is crossed out in the original document] children of my daughter Elizabeth Boxall the sum of Forty Shillings a piece
of lawful money of England to be paid to John Boxall my son in law within one year after my decease and the said John Boxall shall to pay the said sum to his said son when he shall accomplish
the age of Twenty years and also to pay the said 3 3 3 3 CONT several sums of Forty Shillings unto his said daughters withsuch use and interest as he shall make thereof as they shall accomplish
their several ages of Sixteen years and if it shall happen any of the said children to depart this natural life before they shall accomplish their several ages aforesaid then his or her portion
so departed as aforesaid to remain to the other of them which shall be then living equally to be divided.
I give and bequeath to Susan, Mary, Beniamen, Mabell, Henry, Dorthy and Nicholas the children of Beniamen Andrew my son in law the sum of Forty Shillings a piece of lawful money of England
to be paid to the said Beniamen Andrew within one year after my decease And the said Beniamen to pay the said several sums of Forty Shillings with such use and interest as he shall make thereof
to his said sons when they shall accomplish 3 3 3 CONT their several ages of Twenty years and to pay the said several sumsto his said daughters with such use and interest he shall make thereof
when they shall accomplish their several ages of Sixteen years and if it shall happen any? … [ink splodge] said children to depart this natural life before they shall accomplish their several
ages afore said then his her or their portion or portions so departed to remain to the residue of the said children which shall be then living equally to be divided.
I give to John, Nicholas, Robert and Richard Hudson the children of John Hudson my son in law Forty Shillings a piece to be paid to the said John Hudson within one year after my decease and
the said John Hudson to pay the said several sums of Forty Shillings to his said sons with such use and interest as he shall make thereof when they shall accomplish their several ages of
Twenty years and the said sums of Forty Shillings to his said daughter when she shall accomplish the age of Sixteen years and if it shall happen any of his said children to depart this
natural life before they shall accomplish their several ages afore said then his or her portion or portions so departed to remain to the residue of the said children which shall be then living
equally to be divided.
I give to Nicholas, Joane, Annis and Mary Bennet the children of Nicholas Bennet my son in law Forty Shillings a piece of lawful English money to be paid to the said Nicholas Bennet for the
use of the said children 3 3 3 CONT within one year after my decease and the said Nicholas to pay the said sum of Forty Shillings with such use and interest as he shall make thereof unto
his said son when he shall accomplish the age of Twenty yearsand the said several sums of Forty Shillings a piece unto his said daughters ["unto his said daughters" is crossed out in the
original document] with such use and interest as he shall make thereof unto his said daughterswhen they shall accomplish their several ages of Sixteen years.
I give and bequeath to Edmond Yalden, John Boxall, Beniamen, Andrew, John Hudson, Nicholas Bennet and Hewet Hankes my sons in law Twenty Shillings a piece of lawful English money to be paid
them within one year after my decease.
I give and bequeath to John Ayling, John Hayward, William Puttock and John Wase? my servants Twenty Shillings a piece.
I give to Richard Waller my servant Ten Shillings.
I give to Mabell Ayling, Judeth Ayling and Mabell Ayling the younger my maid servants Twenty Shillings a piece. All which said monies given to my said servants to be paid within one year after my decease.
I give to every of my god children 12 Pence a piece.
All the rest of my goods and chattels not given nor bequeathed I give and bequeath to Mabell my wife whom I make whole executrix of this my last will and testament and I do appoint Nicholas
Thomas and William my sons to be overseers of this my last will and testament to see it performed according to my true meaning in witness whereof I have here unto set my hand and seal the day
and year above written.
